Disney’s hit movie of 2016, Moana is available today March 7th on DVD and BluRay. Our little family was lucky enough to celebrate over the weekend with a free movie kit provided by Disney; however all views are my own. We got our own streaming copy from Disney Movies Anywhere and played it on our Google Chromecast. My little 6 year old was SO excited about the movie being available that we did a double feature of Moana and had a little party at our house. The movie is just that good.
Moana is my favorite Disney movie to date. I love that it is about a young 8 year old with a very healthy body type, courage and drive. It still has all the elements of “Disney Movie Magic” but very rich in culture and family tradition. I also love that there is no love story (although I love a good love story). The music is enchanting, addicting and beautifully written. It is no surprise to me as smash Broadway writer and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music in collaboration with South Pacific fusion songwriter Opetaia Foa’i. Newcomer Auli’i Cravalho is beyond perfect for this role and her voice is magical. The tongue and cheek writing for Maui (voiced by Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson) is the perfect complement to the innocence of Moana. My favorite theme of the movie is that Moana strives to stay true to her people and herself and discover her own destiny.
My little guy and I had a blast prepping for our party. We decided on an “island” theme of food. For drinks we made fresh watermelon smoothies that we served in Moana cups. We made snack bowls with plantain chips and sea inspired gummies.
The main dishes were Pineapple Fried Rice (served in Pineapple Boats and a family recipe from my mom’s side) and Pineapple Teriyaki Chicken Meatballs.
The recipe is below:
Pineapple Fried Rice
Ingredients: Pineapple Chunks fresh, Frozen Organic Peas, Quinoa, One Shallot thinly sliced, 2 eggs, Coconut oil, Chinese Five Spice, Finely Ground Pepper and Amino Acids
Directions:
- Warm the coconut oil and drop in the sliced shallots
- Saute until nicely browned
- Drop in pineapple chunks and saute until lightly browned but fully cooked
- Add in frozen peas
- Now crack the eggs and drop them into the pan
- Once everything is fully cooked add cooked quinoa (as much as you desire)
- Lightly season with pepper and Chinese Five Spice
- Add Amino Acids to taste
*Just to add a fun flair to our party, I served it in the pineapple halves from the pineapple chunks
My little guy and I also decided that “dressing” up as Maui and Moana would be a fun touch. We headed over to Target to see what sort of accessories we could piece together. The most crucial part of Moana is the color of the top…we tried our best to match. Every good Moana need the necklace that houses the magical green stone, so we got one and Maui’s Hook.
We cant wait to Moana over and over again! Thank you for the amazing at-home party night in celebration of Moana becoming available on DVD, BluRay and all streaming devices.
WE LOVE MOANA!
