New Aquarium Setup Must Haves

November 18, 2023

So if you have been following along the last couple months on Instagram stories with us, you know we have of-fish-ially become fish people. Yes! That means we spend many an afternoon or weekend at an aquarium shop trouble shooting our tank and getting new plants, fish and snails. Eddie has gone down deep researching how to properly set up a fish tank, how to cycle a fish tank and now that we have lots of fish…how to maintain a healthy tank. There is so much to learn and it has been a blast. I know we will continue to learn as we have our tank longer but here are some of our must haves to have on hand when you decide to go down the freshwater fish journey like us. We have a mosquito fish, cory doras, rummy nose tetras, mystery snails and kuhli loaches. Eventually we would love to get a bigger tank and more fish but our toolkit of fish care will not change.

Here is what we have:

  1. Ammonia is the #1 KILLER of freshwater fish: Fish continually release ammonia into the
aquarium through their gills, urine and solid waste. Uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to the water. Even small amounts of ammonia stress fish and large amounts of ammonia will kill fish. AQUARIAN Ammonia
Remover works instantly to detoxify ammonia.
  2. Good water quality is the key to a healthy, beautiful aquarium. Most tap water
contains chemicals, such as chlorine and chloramines, which make water safe for
people to drink, but they are highly toxic to fish. AQUARIAN Instant Dechlorinator
instantly removes chlorine and neutralizes chloramines.
  3. In a new aquarium, harmful ammonia and nitrite build up from fish waste, often
resulting in fish loss or “new tank syndrome”. The unique, nitrifying bacteria in
AQUARIAN Aquarium Kick Start are scientifically proven to quickly consume
ammonia and nitrite to help prevent fish loss. When Aquarium Kick Start is used
when starting a tank, it allows for the immediate addition of fish. Aquarium Kick
Start is safe to use in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
  4. AQUARIAN Aquarium Cleaner contains over 300 million live bacteria per teaspoonful
to consume sludge and organic debris in your aquarium. Regular use of Aquarium
Cleaner keeps gravel and glass clean naturally and boosts the natural aquarium
cycle, reducing aquarium maintenance over time.
  5. Clear up green or cloudy water caused by gravel and other floating particles in your
freshwater aquarium quickly and safely with AQUARIAN Cloudy Water Fix. Cloudy
water doesn’t have to derail your fish keeping. Cloudy Water Fix will quickly
eliminate cloudy water caused by floating particles and make your aquarium
  6. Disease is often difficult to detect in fish, particularly in its early stages, but bacterial
infections can destroy tissue and other organs. If left untreated, it can ultimately lead
to death. AQUARIAN Melacure is an antibacterial treatment that heals bacterial
infections and repairs damaged fins, ulcers and open wounds, usually within a week
    using a natural active ingredient.

The above items from Aquarian are in our fish tank tool kit we keep right next to the tank along with some basic tools like a net, clippers for plants and long tongs to feed the fish frozen bloodworms. The long tongs help to make sure our bottom feeders get some goodies to eat too!

Didn’t Eddie do an incredible job aquascaping the tank to be the most loving environment for our fish?
