I absolutely love summer movies. They are usually pretty light and fun, so there is no doubt that when I got the chance to preview Valerian and go to the press junket…I was all in! I mean jumping ahead to the 28th century always sounds exciting. Watch the trailer so we can be on the same page. Thanks for hosting me STX Entertainment!
Alright so what is Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets about???
“In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.”
An interesting tidbit that the Director Luc Besson shares is that almost immediately after meeting Dane DeHaan (we know him as Spidey’s enemy in Spider-Man 2), he knew that Dane was absolutely the perfect Valerian. Between the way he said “Hi” and the sparkle in his eyes, there was no one more perfect for the role than him. With the part of Valerian decided, Besson was out to find the next global star. He chose model Cara Delevigne. To ensure that Cara was right for the role of Laureline, Besson put her through trials that you would have in drama school. He asked her to “become an animal and that type of work. It was very old-school, and so very cool.”
