Thursday October 27th, I joined my dear friend Dawn McCoy in a #Friendsgiving for No Kid Hungry (Dawn is an ambassador for NKH) sponsored by Philadephia Cream Cheese at the Westlake Village Inn.
From the name, I thought I understood what NKH was, but I did not understand the full issue of hunger in America. I did not realize:
- 1/5 kids struggles with hunger
- 3/4 teachers say that students come to school hungry on a regular basis
- when children have breakfast there is a HUGE increase in attention span in the classroom and behavior problems decrease substantially
While these are nationwide findings, I wanted to know what No Kid Hungry was doing in my backyard:
NKH-LA found that:
More than 1 million children and teens in Los Angeles are eligible for subsidized meals and may be at risk of hunger.
As a mom, it breaks my heart to think that a child could ever struggle with such a basic need of hunger. This is why this Thanksgiving season we will be raising awareness and funds for No Kid Hungry. As a family we are committed to making a difference, even if only in a small way. We will be attending a “Kids-Giving” where we will be donating for certain items. Could be the craft, could be the dessert, could be per plate or anything the host decides. No matter what it is, we are excited to get together with friends and donate to an incredible organization.
We will be doing a bake sale to raise funds…what will you do?
Thank you for an incredible night Philadelphia Cream Cheese, No Kid Hungry, Dawn McCoy, Good Carma Studio, Emma J Co and Westlake Village Inn!
